In every man there has been implanted a need of (desire for) knowledge, differing
only in its intensity. But the passive human mind, while utilizing every means possible to it
of taking in (and working over) impressions, often gets into an impasse in trying to find an
answer to the question "Why".
Man's eyes are dazzled by the bright play of the colors of multiformity, and under the
glittering surface he does not see the hidden kernel of the one-ness of all that exists. This
multiformity is so real that its single modes approach him from all sides - some by way of
logical deduction and philosophy, others by way or faith and feeling. From the most ancient
times down to our own epoch, throughout the ages of its life, humanity as a whole has been
yearning for a knowledge of this one-ness and seeking for it, pouring itself out into various
philosophies and religions which remain, as it were, monuments on the path of these searches
for the Path, leading to the knowledge of unity. These searches radiate to the Path just as the
radii of a circle join at the center, getting closer into contact with each other the nearer they
get to the center. The goal itself determines the direction of the paths and brings the
wanderers on the paths to a knowledge of the one-ness which reaches the depths where that
knowledge becomes a reality to the knower and cannot be communicated to another who has
not reached the same stage of development. The words and notions of conversational
language become dead and empty, conveying nothing to him who does not carry such
knowledge within himself. In the same way as the sensation of tooth-ache cannot be
impartial to one who has not experienced it, and just as the difference of colors cannot be
conveyed to one blind from birth, and the wealth of auditory sensation cannot be
communicated to the deaf, similarly you cannot tell or relate in words the depth of
knowledge which has become part of a man's being. The words and notions of different
epochs change according to conditions of place and time; unity is eternal and immutable. The
laws, acting in us, and producing the plurality assumed by us, are everywhere the same. From
the most, ancient times humanity has understood this, and by utilizing the language of
symbols and formulas, more perfect than our contemporary language, has gone on handing
its knowledge down to the succeeding generations. And everybody approaching the symbol
and possessing a complete understanding of it, possesses a perfect synthesis of it. Speaking
figuratively, he has this symbol within himself. A symbol, by expressing the knowledge of
the laws of unity, has at the same time expressed the path to it. Side by aide with the basic
symbols, as if they absorbed into themselves wider spheres, there started up and sprang into
existence in subjection to them other symbols and formulae. Everything in the world is one
and is governed by uniform laws, and for that reason the Emerald Tables of Hermes
Trismegistus put it; "As above, so below". All the laws of the cosmos we shall find in
the atom. And in any phenomenon existing as something complete according to laws. (That
is, in any whole.) The knowledge of the laws of the plurality of the One was always based on
the similitude of the microcosm to the macrocosm - of man to the universe, and vice versa.
The fundamental laws of the 3 and of the 7, of the active, passive, and neutral
principles, the laws of activity, are to be found and confirmed in everything, and therefore in
arriving at a knowledge of the world's structure, man was unable to AvoId the path of selfknowledge.
Man's nearest and always readily accessible object of knowledge was always
himself, he being the expression of the action of all the laws of the cosmos. The formula
"Know Thyself" is, in this respect, full off the profoundest meaning: it is one of the symbols

of the knowledge of truth. By becoming acquainted with the symbols expressing the laws of
creation, man will learn the laws themselves, and by learning these in himself he treads the
path of self-knowledge, and in this sense every symbol teaches us about ourselves. By
learning to distinguish the laws of evolution and involution, synthesis and analysis, yes and
no, good and evil, energy and matter, forward and retrograde movements, man will also
discern the reciprocal action of these laws.

Pero la mente humana es pasiva , aún valiéndose de todos los medios posibles que tiene a su alcance (y aún sobre) impresiones, a menudo se mete en un callejón sin salida en el intento de encontrar una la respuesta a la pregunta "¿Por qué". Los ojos del hombre están deslumbrados por el juego brillante de los colores de la multiplicidad, y bajo la superficie brillante, no ve el núcleo oculto de la unidad de todo lo que existe. Esta multiplicidad es tan real que el modo de acercarse es desde la especialización, unos de todos los lados posibles, puede ser através de la deducción lógica y la filosofía, otros por medio de la fe y el sentimiento. Desde los más antiguos hasta nuestra época, a lo largo de las edades de la vida de la humanidad en su conjunto, ha tenido el anhelo de un conocimiento de ésta unidad y se ha embarcado en la búsqueda de ella, vertiéndose a sí misma en diversas cosmologías, mitos fundacionales, filosóficos y religiosos que siguen siendo, por así decirlo, los monumentos en el camino de estas búsquedas para el Camino, que conduce al conocimiento de la unidad.
Estas búsquedas irradian la ruta de acceso, así como la radios de un círculo se unen en el centro, cada vez más cerca en contacto unos con otros mientras más se llega al centro.
El objetivo en sí mismo determina la dirección de los caminos y trae al
caminantes a las rutas de acceso al conocimiento de la unidad que llega a las profundidades en las que el conocimiento se convierte en una realidad , la que conoce y no puede ser comunicada a otro que no ha llegado a la misma etapa de desarrollo.En la actualidad las palabras y las ideas, la lengua están vacías, carecen de significado real, es imposible transmitir para aquél que no realiza tal conocimiento en sí mismo. De la misma manera como la sensación de dolor de muelas no puede ser conocida a quien no lo ha experimentado, y al igual que la diferencia de colores no pueden ser transmitida a un ciego de nacimiento, y la riqueza de la sensibilidad auditiva no se puede comunicar a los sordos, lo mismo no se puede transmitir con palabras la profundidad del conocimiento que se ha convertido en parte de un ser humano. Las palabras y las ideas de diferentes épocas de cambio de acuerdo a las condiciones de lugar y tiempo, han transmitidi que hay una unidad en todo lo que existe, que es eterna, vibracional e inmutable (no interpretar por inmutable que no se mueve, sino que no cambia, sustrato sustancial). Las leyes, actuando en nosotros, y la producción de la pluralidad asumida por nosotros, son en todas partes la misma. Desde los tiempos antiguos la humanidad ha entendido esto, y utilizando el lenguaje de la símbolos y fórmulas, que son más perfecto que nuestro lenguaje contemporáneo, de ésta forma ha entregado sus conocimientos a las generaciones venideras. Todo aquel que se acerca al símbolo y que posee una comprensión completa del mismo, vé que éste posee una síntesis perfecta de la unidad. Hablando en sentido figurado, que tiene este símbolo en sí mismo. Un símbolo, que expresa el conocimiento de las leyes de la unidad, tiene al mismo tiempo la ruta de acceso a la misma. Todo en el mundo es uno y se rige por las leyes uniformes, y por eso las tablas de esmeralda de Hermes Trismegisto decirlo, "Como es arriba es abajo". Todas las leyes del cosmos, las encontramos en el átomo. Y en cualquier fenómeno existente como algo completo de acuerdo a las leyes.
El conocimiento de las leyes de la diversidad en la Unidad debe buscarse siempre sobre la base de la similitud del microcosmos al macrocosmos - de lo análogo del hombre con el universo, y viceversa. Las leyes fundamentales, la Ley de 3 y la Ley de 7, el conocimiento de las fuerzas activa, pasiva y neutral son el principios. En las leyes de la actividad, se encuentran y se confirman en todo, y por lo tanto se puede llegar a un conocimiento de la estructura del mundo, pero sigue siendo un conocimiento externo al hombre, que no modifica su ser. De ésta forma el hombre es incapaz de alcanzar el camino de la consciencia de si (autoconocimiento). Antiguamente era él mismo el objeto más cercano y el acceso más seguro de conocimiento, siempre es primero conocerse a sí mismo, siendo que en sí mismo está la expresión de la acción de todas las leyes del cosmos. La fórmula "Conócete a ti mismo" es, en este sentido, totalmente el más profundo.
